This travel is not a gentle cruise: magma rises, locally accumulates, occasionally flows horizontally, cools down, evolves and change chemistry and properties. This is this complex journey that controls the location, timing, style and energy of volcanic eruptions.<br \/>\nIdeally, studying this so-called volcanic plumbing system would require digging in the heart of active volcanoes. This was the utopic dream of Maurice and Katia Krafft, but this is unfeasible.<br \/>\nDuring this presentation, Olivier Galland will explain how they overcome this challenge for studying magma transport. Finally, he will summarize the industrial applications for petroleum exploration and geothermal energy of this research.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Ugo Nanni<\/strong><\/span> (glacio-seismology researcher &#8211; University of Oslo) et <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Coline Lili Mathy Bouchayer<\/strong><\/span> (Phd student about glacier friction &#8211; University of Oslo) will introduce their research on:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&laquo;<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Accessing the inaccessible &#8211; The hidden secrets of glacier stability&raquo;.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Instabilities in glacier flow are mainly due to changes that occur hundreds of metres below the surface, where the glacier rests on its bedrock. There, water lubrication and sediment deformation exert a strong control on glacier movement. But observations of these processes are still hidden below hundreds of metres of ice.<br \/>\nIdeally, to study the subglacial environment, we would have to dig deep to the heart of glaciers. And that is what they have done.<br \/>\nIn this presentation, Ugo Nanni and Coline Lili Mathy Bouchayer will explain what they have observed at the base of an Arctic glacier and how they have learned to &laquo;listen&raquo; to glaciers to better understand them.
