Frame by Frame returns this year for its 22nd edition on 25 April 2026. The event is organised by Grafill (Yaprak Morali) and the Norwegian Film Institute, with the support and active participation of the Institut français de Norvège, a partner committed to promoting creativity and animation.
As part of this event, the Institut français de Norvège is joining forces with Frame by Frame and Vega Kino cinema to present a special highlight: a visit from Maïlys Vallade, co-director of the film Little Amélie or the Character of Rain, which was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Animated Feature Film category and is adapted from Amélie Nothomb’s autobiographical novel (Amélie et la métaphysique des tubes).
The screening and Q&A with the director will take place on 25 April 2026 at 7.45 pm at Vega Kino in Oslo. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to go behind the scenes of this remarkable film!
Film synopsis

Amélie is a little Belgian girl born in Japan. Thanks to her friend Nishio-san, her world is full of adventure and discovery. But on her third birthday, an event changes the course of her life. For Amélie, at her age, everything is at stake – both happiness and tragedy.
Meeting with the film’s co-director

Maïlys Vallade first trained in graphic arts at EPSAA before joining Gobelins, where she specialized in animated filmmaking. There, she directed three acclaimed short films — L’Hermite, Garuda, and The Lighthouse Keeper, the latter winning the Cristal for Best Graduation Film at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
From 2010 onwards, she established herself as a key collaborator on numerous major animated feature films. From visual development (Adama: The World of Wind) to animation (Ernest and Celestine), and especially storyboard — her field of choice — on The Little Prince, Long Way North, The Swallows of Kabul, I Lost My Body, and Calamity, she has demonstrated a wide range of skills, from layout and 2D animation to background design. She has also worked as a graphic author on several projects, including Calamity, Séraphine, Amélie, and Fleur.
With Little Amélie or the Character of Rain, she reaches a major milestone: her first feature film as both director and screenwriter.
Based in an artists’ collective in a village north of Rennes, Maïlys Vallade champions a deeply collaborative approach to filmmaking. Her work is marked by a strong focus on the symbolic, political, and philosophical dimensions of the stories she brings to the screen.
