Cooperation programs

The Scientific Mission of the French Institute proposes and implements programs and an environment capable of fostering joint projects between France and Norway, as well as researcher mobility.

Calls and programs supported by the French Institute in Norway

The Åsgard program is a mobility program that funds a one-week visit to Norway or France for French or Norwegian researchers and professionals involved in innovation and technology transfer, organized with the support of the Scientific and Academic Department of the French Institute of Norway. It is co-funded by the Research Council of Norway and the French Institute.

Created in 1998 under the name Integrated Action Program (PHC-Aurora), this program aims to develop and strengthen Franco-Norwegian cooperation in research by facilitating the establishment of project-based partnerships between French and Norwegian research teams. It is managed and funded by Campus France and the Research Council of Norway. The PHC-Aurora program covers all fields of scientific research, including the humanities and social sciences. Just over a dozen projects are selected each year. French applications are submitted on the Campus France website. Norwegian application are submitted on the Norwegian Research Council website.

The Åsgard Horizon program is a new initiative launched in 2021. Its purpose is to strengthen Franco-Norwegian research cooperation by supporting the organization of scientific conferences and expert meetings, with the aim of structuring and developing ambitious research networks and preparing the creation of large-scale international projects. Asgard Horizon covers all fields of scientific research. The program is funded in Norway by the Research Council of Norway (NFR), and in France by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs (MEAE) and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research (MESR). Applications are submitted on the website of the French Institute of Norway.

Calls and programs from other institutions

This non-exhaustive list brings together calls for projects, funding opportunities, and scholarships offered to researchers, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral fellows who wish to conduct research with Norwegian partners.

Through its activities, the Centre and its coordinators work to develop cooperation between France and Norway in the fields of social sciences and humanities. This work takes shape notably through workshops for doctoral students, conferences, and study days. They also offer scholarships for PhD candidates aimed at bringing Norwegians to France for 1 or 2 months

The ‘International Partnership for Outstanding Education, Research and Innovation’ is a program led by the Research Council of Norway and intended for Norwegian teams. Its aim is to encourage cooperation between Norway and eight countries considered priorities. France has been part of this list since 2017.

Joint Programming is a European Commission program launched in 2008. Its purpose is to implement the European Research Area (ERA) program, which seeks to promote cooperation in strategic areas among EU member states and associated countries. The French National Research Agency (ANR) and the Research Council of Norway regularly fund calls for projects and often participate in the same calls alongside other European research funding institutions. Horizon Europe is the European Union’s framework program for research and innovation, aimed at ensuring Europe’s global competitiveness. This program covers the period 2021–2027. It succeeds the Horizon 2020 program, which ran from 2014 to 2020. Norway is a partner country, meaning it can participate in consortia and respond to calls for projects on the same basis as any European country.

Interreg Europe is a European initiative to support innovation and research in the fields of transport and sustainable development. It promotes the development of cooperation among stakeholders in these sectors and funds innovative projects.

The German Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and the French Polar Institute Paul-Émile Victor (IPEV) regularly offer calls for projects, which can be found on their respective websites. Joint calls for projects are also offered through AWIPEV.
